DD's used to mean something

Sun Dec 11, 2011, 7:30 AM
Now they are given away freely to what I consider snap shots or mainly junior cartoon work. I am not putting down cartoon work but come on, what about the other genre's (and their are many)?

Hmmm wanders to 500px where the creativity is to a higher standard.

Love all the friends I have made here though and will retain some presence on dA but mostly to be in contact with friends.

Take care out there and keep on plugging to the masses that artistic nude rocks and deserves more recognition.

The biggest problem with the DD situation in the artistic nude category has been the people that they have chosen to select them. A little while ago it was two women from southern California. They had very specific ideas as to what a DD needed, and would rarely step outside of those boundaries (as in about of all the DD's they gave, 95% of them were in therevery narrow view). If the image wasn't shot in a studio with expensive equipment and major lighting, if it wasn't black and white, and if it wasn't "edgy", then it basically would not even get a look in. They were also in charge of the fetish gallery as well - which explains why the selections in the artistic nude category had to be edgy or even verging on the dark. Very few 'beautiful' photos wold get a look in.Then they stopped doing it and the moderator changed sometime early this year, so I though that here was an opportunity for the vast majority of art nudes would then get a chance at recognition. She was based in the UK as well, so I had hoped that it would go away from the very biased selection process from before. Unfortunately, she has apparently got quite ill so she hasn't been as active. But the new art nude moderator (in conjunction with the existing lady in the UK) is one of the old ones I've just mentioned. She is also in charge of the fetish gallery again. So what have we seen in the art nude DD's since? More of the same. So if you want to get an art nude DD you need to be a fully professional photographer with a full on studio and expensive equipment, shot in black and white only, and only have ideas that are dark or 'different'.

I used to think that DD's were designed to recognise skill at all levels. From the talented amateur to the professionals. I had thought that it was a way for other photographers to show recognition that they actually liked their work no matter what the background of the photographer was who had their work up for nomination. On that basis, I was hoping that one day I would have been good enough to get one. My thought was that if I got one, then it would be an affirmation that I actually can take a decent art nude photo. Indeed, I have had quite a few of my outdoor nudes nominated for DD's - but of course to this date I have not received one. Maybe one day, but I am not holding my breath. I do get lots of positive comments though from actual photographers who do like my work. I've come to the realisation that that is worth more than a DD for someone like myself, simply because I do not fit into the very limited scope of photos that seem to be DD worthy by the moderators.

Oh well, after all, this is just a hobby of mine. One that I am passionate about of course, but I do not make any money doing this at all. Luckily there are still quite a few very good photographers that I can enjoy watching their work here and learn from. That is how I have evolved as a photographer, and for that reason I am still happy with deviant Art. After wading through most of the dross that appears in my inbox each morning, there are still plenty of gems to enjoy here :) DD's are a great idea in theory, but in practice, they have lost their shine considerably in the last 4 years.

Wow a powerful answer and thougths straight from the heart, I admire that about you as I am the same. The purists vs passion I find sums it all up. I am a professional photographer but in a light sense but I am self taught so do not work meticulously at times as others do but if it helps you further, I did receive a DD for an image of an outdoor nude (will sourche for you if get the time and you are interested), so do not be disheartened.

Thank you so much for all your words and please, just be true to yourself and only work to aspire to other standards, not be like them :)

Hey that's great that you have received a DD for an outdoor nude!!! Maybe there is hope for those of us who prefer that style? :D I'd love to see which one you did get it for, if you get the time of course :)

And thank you for the kind words of encouragement. I do find it amazing that with just a good non-DSLR digital and a wee bit of photoshop knowledge, good photos can be made. As you say, it is the passion over the purist/technicalist that governs me and my photography :)

Here's hoping we both get DD's in the near future - for out best work of course :p

I actually welcome all suggestions from a wide variety of nude genres. I do not require suggestions be "dark" or "edgy", or only feature "dark and edgy" works. I feature outdoor nudes, black and white, color, classic nudes, indoor, studio, and everything in between. I welcome you to check out my folder of featured DDs, I think you'll find it contains a far wider variety than you seem to think.

Also, my decisions for art nudes have nothing to do with my decisions for fetish - they are two very different galleries, and I treat them as such.

I do require technical skill, that's true. But that does not require high end equipment, it just requires attention to detail, and doing good work. Good equipment makes it easier, but it's never been a requirement from me.

And while self suggestions are welcome (I believe you sent me one recently), I welcome suggestions for all work that you would like to see featured. I don't guarantee I'll feature it, but you never know if you don't try.

Hey there

Well here is my apology to you. I've had a look at the DD folder you just showed me, so I stand corrected. From what I can see, there is a large variety of different styles there. I do not know how I missed them, but there they are. I can only think that the ones that I happened to see on the bottom of various pages here in dA over the last 4 years were a small variety of the actual awards...

So please accept my apology for getting the facts wrong. I feel rather embarrased now

As for the self-suggestion idea, I have never sent one to anyone as I always felt that was rather egotistical of a photographer to ask for an award. I have suggested a few over the last few years, but I have never suggested any of my own work. Saying that, of course I would love a DD, but that is for other deviants to suggest to you (and of course for them to be deemed good enough anyway :D )

Thank you anyway for clarifying the DD situation anyway :)

No worries. We really do welcome conversation, and communication - if you ever have any concerns about what I'm featuring, or what I'm not featuring, feel free to contact me about it. It's definitely hurtful to see stuff like this posted about me when we've never had any conversation about it at all. I think many people forget often that the volunteers are a - just volunteers, and b - just people, and other artists, just like you. I do my best to represent the entirety of the gallery, not just the stuff I'm personally into. I'm not perfect at it, but I do try.

As to the suggestion, my mistake, I get a number of notes, and got you mixed up.

Again, any time you have questions, feel free to let me know.

Hey there

Again, please accept my apologies - the last thing I was wanting was to say things that were hurtful to you. I guess it was a bit of a rant on my part based on my incorrect knowledge of what actually was given the DD award. It certainly is a lesson on not making decisions without the full information at hand...

I think that it has definitely made me want to keep a closer eye on the artistic nude DD awards as there are quite a few very good ones that I have missed :) After all, that is why I enjoy deviantArt - the chance to see other works and new cool ideas :)

Here's the image I got a DD for back in the day:

Never give up with your passions my friend and you are welcome re my time. I offer it when I can.

If you ever see work that you feel is worthy of a DD, then do put it forward. Take care and enjoy what you do.

That's nothing new, though. I stopped bothering to look at DDs a couple of years back, my artistic sense and the DD pickers clearly do not agree and they would get into mud-wrestling matches if I kept looking.
